If I can only use one word to describe Sofia and Ezriel’s Orthodox Jewish wedding, it would be “elegance”. From the Pronovia wedding dress, to the peonies in the floral design, to the epic landscape of the venue Falkirk Estate, I felt I was in a dream. Sofia and Ezriel are so easy to work with. I’m so grateful for being chosen by them to capture their love story. Mazel Tov!
Orthodox Jewish weddings are rich in traditions and rituals that are deeply rooted in Jewish law (Halacha) and cultural practices. Here are some key elements and traditions commonly observed:
1. Badeken (Veiling)
- The groom places the veil over the bride’s face before the ceremony, signifying modesty and his commitment to marry her for her inner beauty.
2. Ketubah (Marriage Contract)
- A legal document outlining the husband’s obligations to his wife, which is read aloud during the ceremony and signed by witnesses.
3. Chuppah (Wedding Canopy)
- The wedding ceremony takes place under a chuppah, a canopy that symbolizes the couple’s new home together. It is open on all sides to welcome guests.
4. Kiddushin (Betrothal)
- The first part of the wedding ceremony where the groom places a ring on the bride’s finger and recites a blessing. This act signifies the formal betrothal.
5. Sheva Brachot (Seven Blessings)
- Seven blessings are recited over a cup of wine by various honored guests. These blessings praise God and wish the couple happiness and prosperity.
6. Breaking of the Glass
- At the end of the ceremony, the groom breaks a glass with his foot. This act serves as a reminder of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and the fragility of human relationships.
7. Yichud (Seclusion)
- After the ceremony, the couple spends a few moments alone in a private room, symbolizing their new status as a married couple.
8. Seudat Mitzvah (Festive Meal)
- A celebratory meal follows the ceremony, featuring joyous dancing and singing. Traditional Jewish music and dances like the Hora are common.
These traditions ensure that the wedding is not only a joyful occasion but also a deeply spiritual and meaningful event that upholds Jewish laws and customs. My team and I had the opportunity to witness and capture these traditions at this wedding. It was such a special experience for us.
